Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress

UMBC joins regional theatres across the country in reviving this deft satire. Originally produced off-Broadway in 1955, Trouble in Mind offers a behind-the-scenes view of veteran actress Wiletta Mayer struggling with her director and cast mates to rehearse a supposedly-progressive Broadway play about an enslaved family. Alice Childress’ daring political comedy still sears with heart-breaking relevance in 2020, as the characters question what it means to portray truth on stage.

This production is directed by Gerrad Taylor.

“A rich, unsettling play that lives up to its title, Trouble in Mind lingers in one’s memory long after its conclusion.” –The New York Times
