In partnership with the 2019 High Zero Festival of Experimental Improvised Music, UMBC presents percussionist Lê Quan Ninh, who has worked internationally with contemporary music ensembles and was a founder member of Quatuor Hêlios (1986–2012), a percussion quartet known especially for performances and recordings of works by John Cage. As an improvisor, he participates at numerous meetings in Europe and in North America and plays regularly in ensembles in forms that mix improvised acoustic and electroacoustic music, performance art, dance, poetry, experimental cinema, photography and video. His discography counts about 40 CDs on European and North American labels.
With the cellist Martine Altenburger, he founded in 2006 the ensemble]h[iatus, a contemporary music ensemble whose its members are at the same time interpreters and improvisers. The group has commissioned works by Vinko Globokar, Peter Jakober, Steffen Krebber, Jennifer Walshe and Anthony Pateras.
Admission is free.
