Chelsea Pace: Lessons from a Decade of Staging Sex

The Center for Innovation, Research and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA) presents Chelsea Pace: Lessons from a Decade of Staging Sex. Pace, assistant professor of movement in the UMBC Department of Theatre, will give an overview of her research on staging sex, the complicated nature of consent, interpersonal and institutional power dynamics, and boundaries. She will share the implications of that work in the realm of theatre and film, but also the potential applications of that work more broadly in academia and beyond.

He will be joined by Anne Rubin, professor of history, and Lee Boot, director of the Imaging Research Center, to discuss the project’s creation and its relationship to the digital humanities landscape. A question and answer session with the audience will follow.

West Baltimore Ruins

The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents West Baltimore Ruins, featuring photography by Shae McCoy, opening March 1 and closing on March 31. As described by the artist, West Baltimore Ruins is “a visual story told by West Baltimore’s daughter.” McCoy created the series between 2018 and 2020 as a means of documenting the architectural landscape of the neighborhood in which she was raised, where an estimated one third of buildings are now abandoned.

As part of Practices for Slow Encounters: A Festival for Camera & Body, the Center for Innovation, Research and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA) presents The Inter-View. Over the course of this collaboration between Jules Rosskam and Cori Olinghouse, ‘the interview’ surfaced as a character, slipping through multiple sites and manifestations. Moving between witness, listener, antagonist, manipulator, interrogator, oral historian, journalist, therapist, and hypnotist they look closely at a range of interview forms and strategies.

The Center for Innovation, Research and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA) presents Pamela Z, who will perform Other Rooms, a program consisting of short solo works for voice, real-time electronic processing, sampled sounds, wireless gesture controllers. The performance, which will combine composed works with a few improvisational pieces, will include stand-alone concert-works as well as excerpts from her larger intermedia performance works.

MEMS Colloquium: “Listeners as Players, Music As Play”

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies minor of UMBC's Department of History hosts Elizabeth Randell Upton, associate professor of musicology at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, whose primary research area is medieval music. Her recent work examines late fourteenth and early fifteenth century vocal music to discover evidence for the experiences of performers and listeners in the medieval past, recorded in surviving musical notation.

But it has also inspired ingenious alternative ways to bring art to audiences. This panel brings together the people behind four compelling examples, encompassing dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts.
