Advocacy through Art

The Gallery at OCA Mocha presents Advocacy through Art, on display through January 15, featuring artworks by Ruby Bassford, Hope Bullard, Marissa Clayton, Tino Clemente, Martina Maya-Callen, Elphena J. Elsar, Chuck Fischer, Liam Garrett, Jessie Houff Benjamin Jancewicz, Nic Koski, Kris McElroy, Iragi Lya Nkere, Zoe Pekins, and Qrcky.

Art empowers us to creatively address the challenges of inequity, hate, discrimination, and oppression that have been fundamental in shaping our reality and that affect us and the people we care about everyday. Now, more than ever, people are speaking out about topics such as social and racial justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, women’s rights, mental health, disability awareness, and environmentalism. We create art not only to reflect on or challenge the world in which we live, but also to educate and mobilize those with different experiences. Art is a lens through which we can learn to understand, empathize, and listen more deeply and intentionally to ourselves and to others.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Advocacy through Art is curated by Madeline Arbutus ’22, visual art and media and communication studies.

The Gallery at OCA Mocha is dedicated to promoting and showcasing the creative efforts of UMBC and the surrounding community in its mission to unite people through artistic expression. Located at 5410 East Drive in Arbutus, Maryland, the gallery is open free to the public, with hours 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
